In a statement released today, Ms Jayalalithaa said that it would not be an exaggration to state that Tamil Nadu under the minority DMK regime had become synonymous with the degeneration of urban areas. The atrocities and violations perpetrated by DMK members was dominating Tamil Nadu and corruption was rampant.
She pointed out that during her tenure, keeping in mind the welfare of the people of Madurai, and considering the growing population of the city, a proposal was prepared and forwarded to the union government to implement several projects including the second phase of the Vaigai drinking water project, new flyover project, new electric lighting project, and project to convert huts to concrete houses within a span of seven years. For these, the union government had allocated 1477 crore rupees under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban renewal mission.
However no works had been carried out under the four year old minority DMK regime. The people of the area were charging that the atrocities and violations of the Madurai corporation councilors and the interference of the members of the Karunanidhi family were the main reason for this. Reports had reached her that when sufficient funds were not available to meet the basic amenities required by the people of Madurai city and to pay the salaries and pensions of the corporation employees, the taxpayers' money was being wasted on foundation laying ceremonies and for the birthday celebrations of Azhagiri.
Ms Jayalalithaa said that besides rampant corruption in giving wages to contract workers, paying pension to corporation employees and in purchasing mosquito repellents, reports had come that the DMK councilors in Madurai were siphoning away the revenue due to the Corporation. She said that the number of patients in the Madurai corporation maternity hospitals and pharmacy was on the rise, but as the number of workers were decreasing and due to lack of medicine and tablets, the patients have been subjected to severe hardships. Sanitation was degenerating throughout the corporation. The focus of the DMK members was on how much they can fleece from each scheme. It was clear that their attention was not on implementing projects.
Ms Jayalalithaa announced that a massive protest demonstration would be held on behalf of the Madurai city district unit of the AIADMK tomorrow near the Meenakshi Bazaar in Madurai to condemn the minority DMK government and the Corporation administration, which instead of fulfilling the basic amenities required by the people, were subjecting the people to various hardships through anti people actions like corruption, atrocities and violations. The demonstration was also to demand immediately fulfillment of the developmental projects of the Madurai corporation.
Ms Jayalalithaa nnounced that the demonstration would be led by the J Jayalalitha Peravai secretary Nainar Nagendran in the presence of the Madurai city district party secretary Sellur K Raju.
She asked Madurai city district AIADMK functionaries, district office bearers, functionaries of the various wings of the party, local body representatives and party cadres to participate in the demonstration in large numbers.
She also appealed to the people to participate in the demonstration which was being organised for a cause of public welfare.
