"When cities in the South Asian context have come to acquire a greater significance, it was Chennai that attracted the spotlight. It was during Jayalalithaa 's regime, as Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Chennai became a gateway for global IT success. Chennai, with all its historical background is now a major IT corridor, thanks to Jayalalithaa. These were based on a long-term perspective that presupposed this metro having to outgrow its old self-image of a being just an Administrative Capital. In planning to dispose of the mounting garbage of Chennai, for the first time in the country, the AIADMK government had initiated steps to set up a plant to generate energy from pelletised garbage. ' Parks and playgrounds play a crucial role in the organic life of any city. Jayalalithaa, deeply influenced by Subrahmanya Bharathi's exhortation to children, saw in the upkeep of these public spaces a crucial input. All these are not a quick fix solution for day today needs, but a long-term strategy for Tamilnadu's stature to grow in the global sphere. One of the most enigmatic, personalities in Indian politics whether in power or not, is AIADMK General Secretary Jayalalithaa. Common man and experts alike, from all walks of life, are in unison that the futuristic leader is Jayalalithaa. Several industries have grown multifold during the 10 years of her golden rule. Jayalalithaa's achievements are amazing. On the auspicious occasion of Jayalalithaa’s 62nd birthday today, let's refresh our minds on the greater achievements under her able leadership.
The golden era of Tamilnadu
The Mission Statement of her New Life Project was: "The New Life Project is a Government of Tamilnadu initiative aiming to translate the vision of Jayalalithaa to make Tamilnadu the numero uno a State by reducing rural poverty & empowering the poorest of the poor.
Leaders have Vision. Leaders have the will to transform that vision into results. From Managing in the Next Society, this was exactly the mission statement of Jayalalithaa reflected.
Education.
The quality education and skill acquisition by the people not only determines the pace of economic growth of the State, but also holds the key for empowering and enabling them to lead the kind of life they value.
Jayalalithaa's government has accorded an unmatched attention towards opening new schools and upgrading existing educational infrastructure. The Government has filled up 58,282 vacancies in teacher posts. The decision to supply free textbooks to all children enrolled in Government and Aided-Schools up to Class XII has been widely welcomed.
Free supply of bicycles to all students studying in Classes XI and XII in Government Aided Higher Secondary schools is a landmark step in facilitating access to quality education in Tamilnadu. This Government scheme to provide an assistance of Rs. 50,000 to students in Government and Aided schools in the unfortunate event of loss or permanent incapacitation of their earning parents due to accidents has been widely welcomed.
Rain Water Harvesting
Water, one's basic requirement, is the need of the hour and with failing monsoons year after year we have to solve the crucial problem by conserving rain water. Based on the visionary leader Jayalalithaa's request, to people of Tamilnadu, Rainwater Harvesting was successfully implemented across the state at every home. Especially, Chennai city has not suffered water scarcity, till date.
Cradle Baby Scheme
The innovative "Cradle Baby Scheme" has won accolades in India as well as from other countries. Under this scheme, cradles are placed at locations like Hospitals, Primary Health Centres, Orphanages and Children Homes which are likely to receive female children which are abandoned by their parents due to social circumstances. Full-fledged reception centres have been set up at Madurai, Theni, Salem, Dindigul and Dharmapuri districts and Primary Health Centres in the districts which are prone to female infanticide have been equipped to receive female babies. Jayalalithaa 's Government has also been propagating against female infanticide.
Farmer's scheme
Jayalalithaa launched a pioneering Programme to secure comprehensive social security for farmers and agricultural laborers through the "Farmers Security Scheme". It has received worldwide acclaim for its remarkable breadth and scope. This revolutionary scheme covered an estimated 1.37 crore agricultural laborers and small and marginal farmers in Tamilnadu and addresses their lifetime cradle to grave concerns. It envisions state support for meeting expenses on marriage, maternity, quality education, pension during old age and relief in the event of death/accidental disability.
Tsunami Relief
Tsunami attacked at the speed of 800 kms. Jayalalithaa worked at a speed of 1000 kills for the relief and recovery of the people. Jayalalithaa's government has earned international applause for the relief work it did after the devastating tsunami of 2004. Jayalalithaa efficiently handled the recovery from the tsunami disaster. As the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, she brought life back to normal quickly.
Self Help Groups
Empowerment of women has always received precedence in the framing of policies and actions of this Government. Jayalalithaa, who initiated the Women Self Help Group Movement in Tamilnadu, has seen it blossom into a spectacular social revolution. It is truly a mass social movement for empowerment of women with nearly 50 lakh women members enrolled in three lakh self help groups. Jayalalithaa 's Government deserves the credit for ensuring the most comprehensive and quality supplementary nutrition coverage among children, expectant mothers and the elderly in Tamilnadu. Able administration, honest approach, impartial judiciary, upgradation of quality of life and peaceful and secured life to the people of the state are the goals. Jayalalithaa promised arid ensured during her regimes in Tamilnadu. Now time has come for change, we should remember the famous quote 'The wheel of change moves on, and those who were down go up and those who were up go down -Jawaharlal Nehru. Common man is badly hit with the shyrocketing prices, people on the road be it driving a bike or a car, are feeling the ups and downs cracking their bones. Jasmine flowers to betel nut leaves are becoming sour grapes to middle Income groups. We need a leader with charishma and the iron will, like that of Indira Gandhi to take over the reins of power. We saw that determination when Jayalalithaa enforced Rain water Harvesting or taking on the challenge of ending Sandalwood Veerappan manace or the video piracy which is a big fear of Tamil film industry.
